Tämän punaisen sydämen teimme viimeisellä huovutustunnilla. Jälleen kerran kokeilimme uutta tekniikkaa: merinovillahaituvat aseteltiin ristikkäin kolmeen kerrokseen sydämenmuotoisen pehmeästä muovista leikatun mallin päälle. Kuitujen päälle ripoteltiin kuumaa vettä, johon oli sekoitettu saippuahiutaleita ja varovasti sormenpäillä töpötellen kuidut työstettiin kiinni toisiinsa. Sen jälkeen malli käännettiin toisin päin ja ylimenevät villahaituvat käännettiin reunojen yli ja peitettiin toinenkin puoli kolmella haituvakerroksella. Kun kuidut olivat kiinnittyneet toisiinsa, sydämen kylkeen leikattiin aukko, jonka kautta malli otettiin pois ja sydän täytettiin lampaanvillalla. Lopuksi teimme "sydänkirurgiaa" ja aukon päällinen kurottiin umpeen uudella villakerroksella.

Yllättäen kurssilla olleet italialaiset ja espanjalaiset naiset ihmettelivät moisen sydämen tekoa ja jatkoivat mieluummin edellisellä kerralla kesken jääneitä kukkasiaan! Tanskalainen opettaja kertoi, että punainen väri ja sydän ovat tanskalaisille - ja muillekin pohjoismaalaisille - tärkeitä joulun symboleita. Olin aivan samaa mieltä! Niin ovat joulun symbolit erilaisia eri maissa.

With this red heart I wish you all a Merry Christmas!

We made this red heart during the last time on the felting course. Once again we tried a new technique: merino wool fibres were place on three overlapping layers on top of a heart shape cut out of soft plastic. On the layer of wool we put hot soapy water and carefully with our fingertips worked the fibers together. After that the shape was turned over and the other side of the heart shape was also filled with three layers of wool. When the fibers were stuck together we cut a hole in the side of the heart and the heart shape was removed and the heart was filled with lambs wool. Finally in the end we did some "heart surgery" and closed the hole by placing wool fibers over the hole and worked them together with soapy water.

Surprisingly the Italian and Spanish ladies on the course were not at all interested in making a red heart but instead wanted to continue with their flowers from the previous time! Our Danish teacher told that red colour and hearts are very important symbols of Christmas for Danes - and also for people from other Nordic countries. I agreed! The symbols for Christmas are so diverse from each other in different countries.

Kirsin järjestämässä joulukorttivaihdossa minä pistelin kortin Katrille. Oli tosi hauska sattuma, että Kirsi asuu samalla kadulla, kuin mummoni aikoinaan. Korttia pistellessäni osasin kuvitella suurin piirtein, missä Katri asuu ja muistelin mummoakin siinä samalla.  

Kiitos Kirsi vaihdon järjestämisestä! Tämä oli ensimmäinen kerta, kun tein kortin ja tykkäsin kovasti. Varmasti pistelen kortteja tämä jälkeen uudelleenkin.

Mallin onViolariumista, Couleur d'Etoilen joulukorttipakkauksesta Joyeux Noël. Mustalle kankaalle pistelyssä auttoi, kun laitoin syliini valkoisen paperin, kankaan reiät erottuivat paremmin vaaleaa taustaa vasten.

In the Christmas Card Exchange orgaized by Kirsi I stitched a card for Katri. It was a nice coincidence that Katri lives on the same street where my Granny used to live. When I stitched the card for Katri I could imagine quite clearly where she lives and I also recalled my memories of my Gran while doing the card.

Thank you, Kirsi, for organizing this exchange! This was the first ever card I stitched and I enjoyed it very much. I am sure I will stitch many more of them in the future.

The chart is from Violarium, a package of 4 Christmas Cards Joyeux Noël by Couleur d'Etoile. I had a sheet of white paper on my lap when I stitched on this black Aida. It made the tiny holes of the fabric visible much better.

Neulahuovutusten jälkeen olemme kurssilla tarttuneet ihanan pehmeään merinovillaan, veteen ja saippuaan. Palloihin punnittiin 2 grammaa villaa, taiteltiin tiiviiksi palloksi, kasteltiin kuumaan veteen ja hierottiin Marseille-saippuan kanssa pyöreiksi.

After doing needle felting in our course we learned to use soap and water with merino wool. We measured 2 grams of wool for each ball, folded the wool into a tight ball, dipped it in hot water and rubbed with Marseilles soap to make round pearls.

Seuraavaksi teimme "esihuopa-levyjä" (prefelt, mikä lienee oikea termi). Nyhdimme merinovillasta kuituja ja asettelimme ne pöydälle paperin muotoon. Kuitukerroksia laitettiin kolme, aina eri suuntiin. Sitten keskelle pirskotettiin kuumaa vettä ja koko levy kasteltiin sormin töpöttelemällä. Sen jälkeen levy kierrettiin apukankaan kanssa rullalle ja sitä "kaulittiin" ja rullattiin jonkin aikaa, että kuidut tarttuivat yhteen. Käsittelyn aikana huopalevy kutistui ja lopuksi se vielä otettiin reippaasti käteen, kastettiin kuumaan veteen ja rutistettiin kuivaksi. Saippuaa ei käytetty ollenkaan.

Next we made prefelt sheets. We pulled thin fibers from merino wool and put them on the table in the form of a paper sheet. We used three layers of wool, each on different direction than the previous. Then we sprinkled hot water in the middle and the whole sheet was made wet by spreading the water with the help of fingertips. Finally we rolled the felt sheet with a cloth and it was rolled out on the table to make the fibers stick together. During this handling the felt sheet shrank and in the end it was dipped into hot water and squeezed dry. No soap was used this time.

Kuivista levyistä leikkasimme kolme kukan mallista palaa, hieroimme ne keskeltä yhteen ja muotoilimme kukaksi. Lopuksi kukka sai kuivahtaa muotoonsa juomalasissa. Kukka vai kaali?

When the felt sheets were dry we cut three flower shapes out of them, rubbed them together in the middle and shaped into a flower. Then it was left to dry in a glass to keep the shape. A flower or a cabbage?

Poika on aina ollut huopakurssilla mukana ja halusi tietysti itsekin kokeilla miten huopahahmojen teko onnistuu. Niinpä otimme kotona neulat ja villat esiin ja poika tikutteli piparkakkumuottien avulla sienen ja tähdenlennon. Aika hyvin onnistuivat 5-vuotiaalta.

My son has been with me on the felting course and naturally he also wanted to try to make something out of wool. So at home we took out the needles and the wool and with the help of gingerbread molds he made a mushroom and a shooting star. Pretty good for a 5-year-old.

Sillä välin kun poika tikutteli omia töitään minä kokeilin tontun tekoa.
